Wisconsin Center District Honors the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
— Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love, published June 5, 1963.

Dr. King’s profound commitment to justice, equality, service and love for humanity continues to inspire and challenge us today. In a time of both opportunity and tension, his call to stand against injustice reminds us that the work for peace and equity never ends.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed on Monday, January 19, is a time to celebrate the life and legacy of this pivotal civil rights leader. It is also the only federal holiday recognized as a National Day of Service, encouraging all of us to improve our communities through meaningful action.

There are several ways to honor Dr. King’s legacy in the Milwaukee area this year, including the King Day Celebration at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, the Milwaukee Public Library celebration at the new Martin Luther King Branch, Day of Service with City Year Milwaukee or the Martin Luther King, Jr. leadership opportunity for kids ages 9 to 13 at Congregation Shalom in Fox Point.

If you are unable to attend a local event but would still like to participate in the spirit of the day, consider one of the following ways to give back:

  • Volunteer or donate at a local food bank or pantry.
  • Deliver meals or groceries to senior citizens or neighbors in need.
  • Donate essential items such as clothing or medical supplies.

As we remember Dr. King’s life and work, let us recommit to advancing the ideals of justice, equality and service that he championed—not just on this day, but throughout the year.
