🌨️ December Safety Bulletin

From your friends in the WCD Public Safety Department, here are some tips on how to stay safe during winter weather and the busy holiday season.

πŸš«β„οΈ Slip, Trip & Fall Prevention

December brings the highest slip-and-fall risk of the year. Freeze–thaw cycles can create black ice around loading docks, entrances and parking structures.

    How to stay safe:

    • 🐒Walk slowly and test footing before stepping off curbs or exiting vehicles.
    • πŸ“žReport icy areas immediately so PSD can ensure they are salted.

    • βœ‹Keep one hand free whenever possible to maintain balance.

πŸ”πŸš—β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹ Vehicle Security During the Holiday Season

December is also peak season for vehicle break-ins. Thieves look for shopping bags, gift boxes or tech packaging left in plain sightβ€”even for a few minutes.

    Tips to protect your vehicle:

    • 🎁 Keep all bags and electronics out of sight. Place items in the trunk before arriving at your destination.
    • πŸ“± Remove phone mounts, cords and packaging that signal valuables may be inside.
    • πŸ’‘ Park in well-lit areas and avoid isolated corners of lots or structures.
    • πŸ‘€ Report suspicious behavior around vehicles or garages to PSD immediately.

πŸ β„οΈ Personal Preparedness: Home & Vehicle Winter Readiness

A well-prepared home and vehicle can prevent emergencies from becoming crises. December is a great time to review your essentials.

    🏑 Home Preparedness

    • πŸ””Test smoke alarms and replace batteries.
    • 🧰 Maintain a small emergency kit (flashlight, batteries, first aid, key medications).
    • πŸ”₯ Ensure space heaters have three feet of clearance and are always turned off when unattended.
    • 🚰 Know where your water shutoff valve is located.

    πŸš™ Winter-Ready Vehicles

    • β›½Keep your fuel tank at least half full.
    • 🧰 Stock a winter kit: gloves, hat, blanket, scraper, small shovel and jumper cables.
    • πŸš˜β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹ Check tire tread and pressureβ€”cold weather lowers PSI.
    • πŸ”‹ Replace weak batteries early.

β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹β€‹βœ¨ Stay aware, stay prepared and look out for one another. Together, we keep our venues safe and sound.
