Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, celebrated each May, is a time to recognize and honor the rich histories, cultures and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across our country. It is an opportunity to reflect on the diverse experiences that have shaped our communities, as well as to acknowledge the resilience, innovation and leadership that continue to move our society forward.
The AAPI community is incredibly diverse, representing dozens of countries, languages and cultural traditions. From art and cuisine to science, technology and public service, AAPI individuals have played a vital role in shaping our society. This month invites us not only to honor those achievements, but also to learn more about the stories, experiences and perspectives that make this community so vibrant.
In science and technology, Kalpana Chawla, the first woman of Indian origin in space, and Ellison Onizuka, the first Asian American astronaut, helped pave the way for greater representation in STEM fields. In public service and leadership, Daniel K. Inouye, a decorated World War II veteran, became one of the longest-serving U.S. Senators and a powerful advocate for civil rights. And In arts and culture, Yo-Yo Ma has had a profound global impact on classical music, to name a few.
Within our workplace, this month is a chance to highlight the voices and contributions of AAPI colleagues. Whether through storytelling, cultural sharing, or simply taking time to listen and learn, small actions can foster greater understanding and connection.
We encourage everyone to take part—explore AAPI history, support AAPI-owned businesses, or engage in conversations that broaden perspectives. By celebrating AAPI Heritage Month together, we strengthen our commitment to diversity, inclusion and respect for all.
